Giving, Part 1: Giving From The Heart

givingI have very little money in my pocket these days, which puts me in the same place as many many other people who feel stressed at this time of year, when there is all this pressure to give, give, give. We give every day.  Smiles and hugs, laughter, kind words, a ride here, a pick-up there, a lending hand, a listening ear, and the list goes on and on and on.  So why all of a sudden is that not enough at this time of the year?

Giving needs to come from the heart.  That is why I struggle this time of year.  Don’t get me wrong- I LOVE giving.  Often I give too much.  But that only defeats the purpose because that leads to resentment, and giving with resentment in your heart isn’t actually giving at all!  There is a whole other long blog I could write about this, but I’ll keep this one short:

This year, to better align with my true values surrounding Christmas, I decided NOT to fall under societal pressure,  to give only what I can, and to give back to my community.

Today I visited a few local stores in order to finish the little Christmas shopping I’m doing this year, and it felt SO AMAZING to be supporting these people.  To add icing to the cake, there were no long line ups, so I was able to have some enlightening and memorable conversations with the store owners which gave me some great insight into their backgrounds, their passions and what led them to their current jobs.  I left each store feeling more and more fulfilled, and more connected.  There were inspiring stories and funny stories, and good feelings on both sides of the counter.  The best part was that I was able to get meaningful gifts that came from the heart.

This was truly the BEST Christmas shopping experience I’ve had in a long, long time because I put my heart back into it.  I hope this short story inspires you to do the same now and in the future.
