As a school teacher, I believe in educating the whole child. While schools are doing their best to implement character education into their curriculum, and teachers/administrators address social issues on a daily basis, the truth of the matter is there are just too many demands that go on in a school day that deal with academics.
I believe in being pro-active. In creating these Art 4 Peace programs, it is my goal to supplement the hard work that other organizations and institutions are already putting into the well-being of our children so they can grow up to be happy, healthy individuals who make a positive contribution to the world.
Through childhood, adolescence, young adulthood and now into mid-adulthood I have consistently witnessed the healing power that The Arts can have. Often we don’t have the words to express the complex feelings that we are experiencing. Sometimes we are even unaware of what is happening internally with our thoughts and feelings. Engaging in arts-based activities can provide us a safe way of getting in touch with those feelings, expressing ourselves, and learning how to deal with difficulties in positive ways.
Art 4 Peace programs are fun, engaging activities that ‘educate the heart’ and empower children by providing them with the necessary skills to:
- identify and deal with emotions
- develop empathy and compassion
- handle conflicts in a healthy manner
- understand and accept differences and diversity
- handle stress, anxiety and depression
- transform aggressive behaviours
No art/dance/music/drama experience is required for any of the programs!
In all programs children explore different art techniques and materials while they are given directives on a certain topic or theme.
